The bilingual assistant assists the limited English speaking students in his/her building with comprehension of academic content, communicates with parents and staff, assists in enrollment process, provides written and oral translation of required information.
Candidates must have a minimum of an Associates degree; or sixty (60) semester hours of college credit; or successful completion of ParaPro assessment examination.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide instruction and assistance in any and all subject areas in which the student is encountering problems.
Serve as a link between the school and family.
Serve as an interpreter at any school function or session that requires this service.
Translate any materials that need to be in the student's home language.
Work towards building a positive self image in bilingual students.
Help students view their culture and themselves with pride.
Encourage the classroom teacher to be aware of and sensitive to cultural differences of students
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
